The Fascinating History of Refrigeration

February 10, 2025

The refrigeration we have come to know and appreciate has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The evolution of refrigeration technology started with natural methods like harvesting snow and ice to cool food and drinks. Through time, there have been many different methods of refrigeration. From Ancient Egyptians who used evaporation to cool water, to 1800’s Western civilization using ice houses and ice boxes. Frederic Tudor revolutionized the ice industry by harvesting ice from northern ponds and shipping it to warmer climates, paving the way for mechanical refrigeration.

Mechanical refrigeration began in the 1750s with William Cullen’s refrigeration machine. Over the next century, inventors like Jacob Perkins and Michael Faraday contributed to the development of vapor compression systems and ammonia liquefaction. By the early 1900s, air conditioning systems were installed in buildings, marking the beginning of modern refrigeration.

Today, refrigeration is a cornerstone of industries worldwide, enabling food preservation, climate control, and countless other applications.
